Negombo has been receiving travellers longer than most famous tourist destinations have existed – Portuguese missionaries, Dutch canal engineers, and British colonial administrators each left their mark on a town shaped most fundamentally by its working fishing community. The Dutch canal system is both living infrastructure and historical document, and the Catholic churches concentrated along the coastal strip give Negombo an architectural character found nowhere else in Sri Lanka. The pre-dawn fish market on the beach – organised, fast, and centuries-old in its practice – is one of the most genuinely local encounters on the west coast.
