Rainforest & Mountain Adventure Expedition

Sri Lanka’s most comprehensive outdoor adventure journey – combining white water rafting on the Kelani River, multi-day trekking through the Knuckles Mountain Range cloud forests, highland exploration in Ella, a wildlife safari at Udawalawe, and a south coast coastal finale into one extraordinary 12-day adventure circuit that covers the island from its wildest river gorges to its most remote mountain villages and most beautiful ocean shores.

Day 01 - Arrival - Negombo

Airport arrival and first night in Negombo before the adventure begins.

Day 02 - Negombo to Kitulgala Rainforest - Kelani River Arrival

The drive from Negombo toward the Kelani Valley passes through the Sri Lankan interior’s lush, hilly landscape before arriving at Kitulgala – a forested river town of extraordinary natural beauty where the jungle-clad gorges of the Kelani River and the lowland rainforest surrounding them create one of the most atmospherically wild natural environments in the country.

Day 03 - White Water Rafting & Rainforest Trekking

A morning of white water rafting on the Kelani River’s Grade 2 and 3 rapids – thrilling, physically engaging, and set in a corridor of tropical forest beauty that makes this one of the most photographically spectacular adventure experiences in Sri Lanka – is followed by an afternoon of guided rainforest trekking through endemic birdlife habitats and waterfall valleys with a naturalist guide.

Day 04 - Rainforest Exploration - Endemic Birds & Kelani River Afternoon

A second day in Kitulgala’s extraordinary lowland rainforest environment – guided nature walks through endemic bird habitats, river swim in a deep natural pool beneath a waterfall, and the particular pleasure of spending unhurried time in one of Sri Lanka’s finest and least-visited natural environments without the pressure of a tight schedule.

Day 05 - Kandy - Peradeniya Gardens & Cultural Arrival

The drive from Kitulgala to Kandy through scenic hill country landscapes arrives in Sri Lanka’s cultural capital for a Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens visit – 147 acres of Asia’s finest botanical collections – and an evening in the Kandy Lake’s atmospheric surroundings.

Day 06 - Knuckles Mountain Range - Cloud Forest Trekking

The drive to the Knuckles Mountain Range delivers one of the finest trekking experiences in South Asia – a guided walk through cloud forests, traditional mountain villages, and scenic ridges with panoramic views across the surrounding highland plains. The Knuckles’ combination of endemic wildlife, dramatic landscape, and genuine cultural encounter with mountain communities makes it one of the most rewarding and least commercially mediated natural adventures available in Sri Lanka.

Day 07 - Knuckles - Waterfalls, Mountain Trails & Summit Views

A second day in the Knuckles Mountain Range explores the higher elevation trails, seasonal waterfalls, and panoramic summit viewpoints of a highland wilderness area that rewards multiple days of exploration with continuously varying landscapes and wildlife encounters. An evening at the eco-lodge in the forest provides the perfect contemplative end to a physically exhilarating day.

Day 08 - Tea Country to Ella - Little Adam's Peak Afternoon Hike

The drive through Sri Lanka’s tea estate landscapes to Ella passes through some of the island’s most beautiful highland scenery before an afternoon hike to Little Adam’s Peak – the short trail through tea gardens to a summit with panoramic views across the southern highlands and Ella Gap that is the perfect physical and scenic conclusion to the day’s highland journey.

Day 09 - Ella - Nine Arch Bridge, Mountain Trails & Highland Leisure

A full day in Ella for the Nine Arch Bridge timed to the hill train’s crossing, further mountain trail exploration, and the leisurely highland village atmosphere that makes Ella one of the most naturally enjoyable and personally memorable places in Sri Lanka for travellers who have come for adventure as much as sightseeing.

Day 10 - Udawalawe National Park Safari - Elephant Country

The drive south from Ella to Udawalawe delivers a jeep safari through the open grassland sanctuary where wild Asian elephant herds of extraordinary size are virtually guaranteed encounters – a perfect wildlife finale to a journey that has traversed the island from its wildest river gorges to its highest mountain trails.

Day 11 - Tangalle - South Coast Beach & Rekawa Turtle Nesting

The coastal arrival at Tangalle – one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and undeveloped beach destinations – is combined with an evening visit to the Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary, where five species of sea turtle nest on the beach at night under the protection of a community conservation programme that has made Rekawa one of the most important turtle conservation sites in the Indian Ocean region.
