Scenic Train Journeys & Tea Country Trails

A journey centred on the extraordinary railway heritage and tea country landscapes of Sri Lanka’s central highlands – designed for travellers who want to experience the famous hill train route as the emotional and scenic heart of their Sri Lanka visit, complemented by the tea estate walks of Hatton and Haputale, the Horton Plains highland plateau, the mountain village of Ella, and the colonial grandeur of Galle Fort.

Day 01 - Arrival - Negombo

Airport arrival and Negombo coastal first night.

Day 02 - Scenic Drive to Kandy - Lakeside Evening Arrival

The drive from Negombo to Kandy follows the old Kandy Road through increasingly beautiful highland landscapes before an evening arrival in the hill capital – a lakeside walk and the atmospheric surroundings of the Kandy temple complex at dusk providing a beautiful and unhurried introduction to the highland chapter.

Day 03 - Kandy Cultural Morning & Scenic Drive to Hatton Tea Country

The morning in Kandy – Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, and a spice garden visit en route – is followed by the scenic drive into the Hatton tea country, one of the most extraordinarily beautiful highland landscapes in Asia, where tea estates cascade down every valley and the colonial bungalow architecture of the estate world sits among the most refined plantation scenery in the country.

Day 04 - Lipton's Seat, Nuwara Eliya & Gregory Lake

Lipton’s Seat – the extraordinary viewpoint above Haputale from which Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his vast Ceylon tea empire – rewards the morning drive with a panorama stretching from the tea estate slopes to the southern plains and coastal horizon on clear days. The afternoon in Nuwara Eliya includes Gregory Lake and the town’s distinctive colonial architecture.

Day 05 - Horton Plains & World's End Nature Walk

The full Horton Plains circuit walk – 9 kilometres through montane grassland and cloud forest to the cliff edge of World’s End – visited at dawn for the clearest views across the 880-metre escarpment, followed by Baker’s Falls and a morning of highland nature at its most extraordinary.

Day 06 - Scenic Hill Country Train - Nanu Oya to Ella

Asia’s most beautiful railway journey unfolds between the Nuwara Eliya lowlands and the Ella valley – a slow, open-window passage through a continuous landscape of tea estates, mountain tunnels, and dramatic viewpoints that makes the train journey itself the most memorable single experience of the highland chapter.

Day 07 - Ella - Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak & Ravana Falls

A full day in Ella – the Nine Arch Bridge timed to the hill train’s crossing, Little Adam’s Peak’s panoramic summit, and Ravana Falls’ theatrical roadside cascade – provides the depth of highland village exploration that the scenic train arrival deserves, with time in the afternoon for the village’s cafes, local food, and mountain atmosphere.

Day 08 - Scenic Drive to Galle - Fort Exploration & Colonial Evening

The drive south from Ella through the hill country and coastal approaches to Galle provides a landscape transition of dramatic beauty before an afternoon and evening in Galle Fort – its UNESCO-listed ramparts, Dutch-period villas, boutique galleries, and lighthouse walk creating one of the most atmospheric heritage experiences available on the south coast.

Day 09 - Colombo Return, Gangaramaya Temple & Departure

The southern expressway drive to Colombo allows time for a final Gangaramaya Temple visit and Independence Square walk before the airport transfer.
